Chapter Sixteen

Aletta pulled the earplugs out of her ears and grabbed the telephone. She hadn’t slept much at all, but she was wide awake at seven-thirty, hoping the phones were back on. She let it ring until the answering machine picked up.

“Hello, this is Aletta. I’ll be out of town until Monday, so I won’t be doing readings till I return. You can leave a message, and I’ll call you when I get back. Have a great day.” Beep.

“Sissy! Vee! Ruby!” she called into the machine as loud as she could.

Joy rolled over and put her pillow over her head.

Finally, Vee picked up the phone, her voice croaky and tired.

“Oh, my Lord above,” Aletta sighed. “I’ve been so worried.”

Vee told her the whole story as Aletta held her breath.

“I don’t even know what to say,” she said when Vee finished. “I’m sorry as hell you had to go through all that.”

Vee laughed nervously. “It’s the least I could do,” she said.

“I can’t believe that bastard of an ex of mine didn’t even come by. He’s really gone even lower than I thought he could with this. I mean, I know he gets so much joy out of making my life miserable, but at the expense of his kids? I’m just in shock.”

Joy flopped over again. “That man is conscience-free. How can he still shock you?”

“All right, Vee. Well, call me if you need anything at all. I’m glad everyone’s okay,” Aletta said, then hung up the phone.

As Aletta let water trickle over her in the pink and turquoise shower, she decided she needed to go back home. As she dressed in her Chic jeans and denim shirt with embroidered flowers, she considered the words she would use to let her kids know she meant what she was saying. She pulled on her cowboy boots, thinking she’d let them know at breakfast, then opened the door and stepped outside.

The light of the dazzling sun, warm and soothing, was the first thing to fill her senses. Then the smell of piñon and sage accompanied the fresh, crisp mountain air into her nose and lungs. She looked up, and her breath was snatched away. Just over the roofline of the hotel, a line of magnificent deep purple mountains muscled their way into the bluest sky she’d ever seen.

As she stood there, she felt her entire body tingling, but not only from the fulfillment of her senses. It seemed as if the ground itself was vibrating slightly and sending its current through her. There was something about this place, there was no doubt about that. She looked around and noticed a bumper sticker on a car parked at the office. NEW MEXICO: LAND OF ENCHANTMENT, it read. A little laughter escaped from her.

Just then, Bobette and Betty turned the corner into the parking lot. They were so happy, they looked just like two little girls. They’d been taking a walk and were thrilled with the mountains and the fresh air and the cute adobe architecture.
